So often we wait to see what our government can do for our island. Well, here’s a list of what we can do for our island without relying on government and it only requires your time.
7 Ways to Love your Community
1: Volunteer at a Nursing Home
Older people can be lonely, especially after they’ve lost their significant others. I recommend making and delivering hand-made cards, bringing them flowers, spending time in conversation and connection with our valued elders.
2: Offer to Babysit
Young couples with small children are usually exhausted and often in need of a babysitter for a date night. Offering your services could be just what they need to reset and recharge.
3: Plant a Tree!
The earth deserves our love and attention too and something as simple as planting a tree can help to lower our ecological footprint and bring us into closer connection with nature.
4: Donate to Local Charity or Organization
Donating to groups who are dedicated to love is a cool way to celebrate the day. If you need some recommendations, here are two: BdaisLove is a local organization that promotes collaboration, responsibility, activism and love for our community and the environment.
OutBermuda supports the wellbeing, health, dignity, safety and protection of the LGBT community in Bermuda and has recently partnered with Solstice to provide free counseling services to LGBT youth.
5: Plan a Date for an Older Couple
Often, couples that have been together for decades no longer celebrate things like Valentine’s. While these couples may share a type of deep love that some of us can only dream of, years of repetition sometimes means that commercial holidays may have lost their novelty. Many of these couples would love to go on a unique and fun date, and if planned and organized by someone else, it could act as a beautiful reminder that long term love deserves long term effort.
6: Donate to your Local Thrift Store
Thifting reduces the amount of waste and energy that we produce by creating clothing, which makes it another way to show love to our environment. Additionally, thrifting puts quality and affordable clothes in the hands of those who may not be able to shop traditional retail. Show your community love by donating clothes that you no longer use to local thrift stores.
And add to the love by buying from thrift stores too! It’s sustainable and most thrift stores give back to charities. Plus there are some fun thrifting date ideas on TikTok to try!
7: Support Local Entrepreneurs
By buying local, you help to create and secure jobs in your community. Small businesses also reflect the identity of the community as a whole and encourage us to keep our unique culture and customs alive.
