Does female representation matter to you – in politics?

Bermuda has a population of about 64,000 persons. Women take up more than 50 per cent of Bermuda’s population (source: https://countrymeters.info/en/Bermuda). However out of all 81 persons running from OBA, PLP, AND FDM – only 17 are women. About 21 per cent of the 2020 General Election is made up of women. And 79 per cent is men.

According to the number of candidates they have in their party, the Free Democratic Movement is 50% female. Their ratio of women to men is 7:7. FDM has 14 candidates running in the upcoming General Election.

The One Bermuda Alliance has a total of 31 candidates. The ratio of women to men in their party is 10:31. Their party is about 32.2 per cent female.

The Progressive labour Party was the only party to fill all 36 constituencies. According to the number of candidates in their party, PLP is 27.8 per cent female. Their ratio of women to men is 10:36. They filled the same amount as OBA but because they have more seats filled with men – their percentage makes them the lowest representation of women of the three parties.

Curtis Richardson, PLP candidate for constituency #22, comment under this post stating that this is the highest amount of women the PLP has ever had. He was responded by a citizen that “the bar was set quite low”.

How do you feel about the representation of women in politics?

(NOTE: There are five people running independent and two are women in that category. However, those running independent are not included in this data.)
