Professional Golfer, Camiko Smith: “I want to make an impact in people’s lives through golf”

When you think about golf, what are the first three things that come to your mind? Grass? Polos? Rich white people?

Rarely do we think black golfers when we think about golf – except Tiger Woods – but there are many.

Camiko Smith is a professional golfer who – despite no one in his family pursuing the sport seriously – decided he’d take the risk, save his money and go professional. Although he started late in his career, his goals and determination are monumentous.

“I’m very self driven” says Camiko, “I want to play on the PGA tour full time and win on the PGA tour. Possibly win a major – that would be great.”

In this interview, Camiko shares the not so glamorous side of golf that some people would not know. Of course – like most professionals – there are countless hours of training, but some sacrifice to play professionally, are much harder than one would assume – especially when you don’t have full sponsorship, like Camiko. Camiko says golf takes money and he is not apart of a legacy family in golf – so he had to earn his access and success.

Camiko shares moments in his career where he says, “I haven’t shared that with anybody” and also talks about his idols, what he’s learnt along the way and of course – his favourite pump up songs before a tournament.
