Historic. The Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) is set to host the first-ever Bermuda Art Month in October 2023. This month-long celebration of art and culture promises to be a transformative event for both artists and the community alike. One artist and award winning photographer, Jayde Gibbons, whose unique perspective and dedication to her craft are set to leave a lasting impression.
This Friday, October 13, the Commissioner’s House at the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard will become the epicenter of creativity and innovation as it hosts the opening night of Jayde Gibbons’ show, ‘FAMILY (fam, I love you)’.
What makes this event truly historic is that her mesmerizing showcase will grace the walls of the Commissioner’s House for an entire year.
In a candid video interview, Jayde Gibbons shares her experiences as an artist in Bermuda, touching upon the challenges faced by aspiring artists in a landscape with limited resources. She eloquently captures the essence of the “struggling artist” narrative. Jayde also articulates her hopes that Bermuda Art Month will inspire those who can assist, encouraging them to rally behind the island’s talented artists.
“Come out and support. Don’t wait until we’re gone to support, and then you can’t afford our work after that,” said Jayde jokingly while emphasising the urgency of nurturing local talent.
Following the awe-inspiring art show, the evening will crescendo into a symphony of sound and color with the influence of DIA, a live musical band. DIA will take center stage, performing sets with other established, local artists. This live session will be complete with personalized drinks that reflect the essence of each artist performing. The Bermuda National Gallery at City Hall will be the place to be at 8:30 pm on Friday for this unforgettable experience.
Integral to the success of Bermuda Art Month is the diligent work of Jasmine Furbert from the BTA, who played a pivotal role in making this first official art month a reality. Her dedication to fostering a thriving artistic community in Bermuda has borne fruit in the form of this exciting month-long celebration.
